CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP GUIDE
In Humboldt County, along the Redwood Coast, lies the California coastal town of Eureka. This charming seaside town, featuring giant redwoods, Victorian architecture, beautiful murals, and unique artisanal businesses, is the perfect road trip stop or weekend getaway.
QUICK LINKS
CARSON MANSION & PINK LADY MANSION
One of the most well-known and photographed buildings in Eureka is Carson Mansion. This ornate building, built in 1884, was the home of William Carson. The stunning Victorian building and pristine gardens quickly set the trend for architecture all around Eureka. It was owned by Carson’s descendants until 1950, when it was bought by the current tenants, the private Ingomar Club.
Across the road from the Carson Mansion is The Pink Lady Mansion, another beautiful Victorian built by William Carson in 1889 as a wedding present for his son.
Unfortunately, the mansions are not open to the public.
OLD TOWN
The main area to explore in Eureka is Old Town. Here you will find the best cafes, restaurants, bars, boutiques, museums, and more stunning Victorian architecture.
We recommend starting the morning with coffee and pastry from Ramone's Bakery & Cafe. Then for lunch, stop by Los Bagels.
While wandering around Old Town, look out for all the colourful murals and street art.
CLARKE HISTORICAL MUSEUM
Located in Old Town is the Clarke Historical Museum. It is housed within the former Bank of Eureka building, built in 1912 and later bought in 1960 by Cecile Clarke, a Eureka high school teacher. The museum proudly presents the history and culture of the local area, including Native American culture and the Gold Rush, lumber and farming history.
There is a small admission fee for the museum.
SEQUOIA PARK
Walking amongst the towering redwoods at Sequoia Park will make you feel like you've been transported to the middle of a forest rather than an inner-city park just steps away from suburbia. The 67 acres of Sequoia Park feature trails, picnic areas, ponds, playgrounds and Sequoia Park Zoo, the oldest zoo in California and home of the Redwood Skywalk, which takes you approximately 30m (100ft) above the forest floor.
Sequoia Park is one of our favourite “inner-city” parks that we have ever visited.
